What is Hyundai Lane Following Assist System?

While Hyundai’s Smart Cruise Control (SCC) is one way to help relieve Iowa drivers during highway cruising and long road trips, Lane Following Assist (LFA) is another driver-assistive technology that can lend a helping hand (literally) to road-weary travelers. This Hyundai SmartSense safety feature can activate a lane departure warning and apply gradual steering inputs to the driver’s steering, when needed, to help maintain the vehicle in the center of a lane. How does it work? Take a ride with Vern Eide Hyundai Sioux City as we explore Lane Following Assist.

How does Hyundai Lane Following Assist work?

Hyundai’s Lane Following Assist employs a windshield-mounted camera to detect lane markers on a given roadway. If the system recognizes the vehicle drifting from its lane, it will provide the driver with slight steering inputs to return the vehicle back to the center of its lane.

How do I use my Hyundai Lane Following Assist?

Lane Following Assist (LFA) is not automatically activated upon starting your Hyundai vehicle. Certain steps need to be followed and requirements need to be met for the system to function correctly.

  • Press the LFA button (steering wheel icon) located on the right-hand side of your steering wheel.
  • Once the system is enabled (not active) you will see the same steering wheel icon display on your instrument panel.
  • For LFA to be enabled, the system must detect lane markers on both sides of your vehicle and you must be traveling below 93 MPH.
  • While driving, you will see a graphic of your vehicle on the instrument panel with lane markers on either side of it.
  • If a lane maker is detected its color will change from gray to white.
  • When both lane markers are detected the steering wheel icon will change from white to green to indicate the system is now active.
  • If you take your hands off the steering wheel for several seconds while LFA is active, you will receive a visual alert on your instrument panel.
  • After the visual alert, if you still don’t have your hands on the steering wheel, LFA will deactivate. However, if you press the LFA button the system will resume.

Note: LFA will disengage whenever the turn signal is applied. Once the vehicle has returned to the center of a lane and the turn signal is off, LFA will reactivate.

Why is my Hyundai Lane Following Assist not working?

What can you do if you believe your Lane Following Assist is not working properly? Certain factors can affect the system’s performance and functionality. First, review the criteria below to make sure none of these factors played a role.

  • If lane markers are faded or not visible, LFA may not be able to detect them, causing the system to disengage.
  • If you have been driving on a very straight road for a long period of time without much steering input, LFA will deactivate. In this instance, apply subtle steering movements to keep the system engaged.
  • If you are driving on poor road conditions or during hazardous weather, LFA may not fully function.
  • If you completely steer your vehicle out of the center of your lane, LFA will not work.

After reviewing the circumstances listed above, if you still feel like your Lane Following Assist is not working correctly, please contact our Hyundai service professionals and we’ll be happy to help you!

A Hyundai allows you to comfortably drive out on the road, while providing a driver attention warning helping you become aware of how close you are to the next lane, the vehicle ahead, and much more.

[1] Lane Following Assist (LFA), when actively engaged with Smart Cruise Control or Highway Driving Assist, can help keep the vehicle centered in its lane only when the lane markings are clearly visible on the road. Lane Following Assist will not work under all circumstances and will not prevent loss of control. Lane Following Assist is a supplemental assist, and does not replace the need for extreme care and attention by the driver. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations.
